Golfing at La Réserve Golf Links: Stunning Challenges and Signature Holes
My first two rounds were at La Réserve Golf Links, the first contemporary links-style course in the Indian Ocean. Designed by Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, this course is both visually stunning and challenging. With the wind playing a major factor in the round, every shot required precision, and the course’s unique layout kept me on my toes.
Signature Holes at La Réserve
- 3rd Hole: A dramatic par 4 tee shot from an elevated position with stunning views of the Indian Ocean. The green seems to float towards the sea, making for a memorable shot.
- 12th Hole: A par-5 that plays like a par-4 in the wind, with a steep drop and a challenging approach shot.
- 17th Hole: A par-3 tucked behind dunes, with only one option a precise tee shot over the natural terrain to land on the green.
The rough on this course is tough; one stray shot, and your ball could be lost in the thick, unplayable grass. But the challenge is what makes it special. The wind, combined with the dense rough, tested my game, and there was no room for errors on shots into the crosswinds. The views, however, made every hole a stunning experience, with the shimmering ocean in the backdrop and the undulating dunes forming the perfect contrast to the challenging greens.
Le Château Golf Course: Parkland Perfection and Tropical Charm
After two rounds at La Réserve, I switched things up with a visit to Le Château Golf Course, a parkland course that offers a completely different experience. With lush greenery, mature trees, and volcanic rock outcrops scattered throughout, Le Château’s beauty is truly a sight to behold.
Signature Holes at Le Château
- 14th Hole: A long par-5 that twists through the foothills, featuring a multi-tiered green and a challenging tee shot that requires both length and accuracy.
- 9th Hole: A short par-4 that wraps around a serene water feature, with a narrow landing area that makes for a tense and exciting hole.
- Volcanic Rock Outcrops: Scattered throughout the course, these natural features add both visual drama and strategic complexity, requiring careful shot-making.
The course also has its own share of wind challenges, especially with the same high winds affecting my round. The trees provided some shelter, but they also presented tricky angles for tee shots and approach shots into the greens. The layout, however, offers more forgiving fairways compared to La Réserve, and the beauty of the tropical parkland is something to behold.
